Sony has sold 18.5 million PlayStation 4 units since launch

Sony PlayStation 4 PS4 Gaming Console It may have been a really tough couple of weeks for Sony owing to the cyber attack, but the holidays did bring about a reason for celebrations and that’s a milestone of 18.5 million PlayStation 4 sold. The company’s CEO revealed the latest development at the CES 2015 expo.

As you probably know, Sony is also facing huge financial losses and the PlayStation 4 has been its best bet. CNET is reporting that CEO Kazuo Hirai revealed that the holiday sales alone topped at 4.1 million which is a pretty huge number. He also went on to say that the PS Online service has a use-base of 10.9 million subscribers.

Sony’s latest achievement isn’t the only thing making the news. The company has also revealed that it will implement a subscription based model for the PlayStation Now service. The new offering will go live starting January 13 and it will grant players complete and unlimited access to over 100 PS3 titles currently available in the catalog.

However, the new subscription model is only available for PS4 customers in North America. This doesn’t mean that it won’t be headed to other locations and wider rollout has been promised for the future. However, there’s no concrete information on that front as yet.

Where pricing is concerned, a month’s subscription will cost you $19.99, while a quarterly package will be available for $44.00 (approximately $15 each month). There’s also a free seven-day trial being offered in case you’re not quite sure whether you really need the new scheme. As part of the launch, Sony has also released a PS Now there which is available for all PS4 owners.

Sony plans to put all its efforts into the PlayStation business and it has already revealed that it’s cutting back on the TV and smartphone segments owing to losses.
