Sony introduces special PS1-themed PlayStation 4

Sony is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the PlayStation this year, and what better way to do that than offering a PlayStation 4 console dressed in the garb of the PS1. This newly designed machine will be made available in a limited quantity of 12300 units, and that too, only in Japan, Europe and North America. Pre-orders for it will commence on December 6, when Sony’s PlayStation Experience 2014 event is scheduled to go live.

This PS1-themed PS4 bears an ‘original grey’ colored body finish, and comes packaged in a special commemorative box. A similarly colored DualShock 4 controller and a PlayStation Eye camera will also be offered along with it. Its price has been revealed to be €499. Each of the 12300 systems will be individually marked with numbers, and will bear tiny PlayStation symbols, along with the number 20.

The PlayStation 4 was first released by Sony in November last year, and has turned out to a winner in the current-gen console race, having beaten the Xbox One on many counts. With this machine, Sony brought forth its emphasis on social gameplay, and also granted the controller a special Share button which lets you instantly stream your sessions for others to view them. There is no native backwards compatibility for it, but with the cloud-based PlayStation Now service, gamers can enjoy old games on not only their consoles but also their smartphones, tablets and PS Vita handhelds.
