Sony may release an updated PS4 with 4K support

This is pretty big news; Sony is apparently working on a version of the PS4 console that will allow it to render games in 4K resolution. This version will ship with increased GPU power in order to make that possible, according to murmur that has been going around in the industry.

Details about this particular gaming system are incredibly scarce at the moment, but the mere rumor of its existence has sent tongues wagging. It’s being said that Sony is already in talks with developers over content for the upcoming PS4 variant.

Kotaku has learned from its ‘developer sources’ that many from the industry are calling it the PS4.5 since it is not going to be a fully remade console. One developer has also referred to it as the PS4K, but neither of the two look like good candidates for its official name.

PS4K

A PS4 supporting 4K visuals will finally bring consoles in line with PCs which have been offering ultra HD resolution graphics since quite some time now. Additionally, the improved GPU will apparently also enhance games supported by Sony’s upcoming PlayStation VR headset.

If ever such a device is actually released, what about those who already own the PS4? Will be allowed to upgrade the console at a lesser cost or will they need to purchase it entirely? What kind of a price tag will it grab and when will it be made available? All these questions remain unanswered, but we’re sure we’ll be hearing about the device in the near future.
