Sony has discontinued PlayStation TV in Japan

In news that has definitely come as a huge surprise, Sony has announced that it is discontinuing sales of the PlayStation TV gadget in its home market, Japan. The reason for this move has not been mentioned officially yet, but it seems the device wasn’t doing much good in terms of sales.

It has been confirmed that both the PlayStation TV system itself as well as its bundle which comes with a DualShock 3 controller and a memory card are being discontinued. The stocks that are remaining in the market right now are the last chance for people in Japan to lay their hands on the device.

It is being said that PlayStation TV wasn’t that big a hit in Japan, having sold just about 185000 units according to Dual Shockers. With its discontinuation in the country, questions have now sprung over its fate in western markets. No announcement has been made yet, but this could mean that the device will indeed be ditching the western markets as well in the near future.

This probability is being accentuated by the fact that PlayStation TV does not seem to be doing well in these markets as well. Its launch price of $100 has now been brought down to $50 by some retailers, who are hoping to move their stocked units.

For those unaware, PlayStation TV is a micro-console that can be connected to your HDTV in order to play PS Vita, PSP and PlayStation One games. Its support for PlayStation Now also enables it to stream PlayStation 3 titles on your screens.
