Sony announces it’s hosting a PlayStation VR event next month

Sony has started sending out invites to an event that will most likely see the unveiling of its PlayStation VR headset. It’s slated to take place on March 15, during the annual Game Developers Conference. It should be noted that the head-mounted virtual reality display was also first spoken of at this event itself last year.

It’s hard to say when the device will actually go on sale though. Sony had vaguely talked about the ‘first half of 2016’ being the expected release window for it, and it seems a March unveiling will put it well on course for that. A recent rumor about the PlayStation VR having been slated to be released this fall has been quashed by Sony.

This advanced head-mounted display will work only with the PS4 console, and is expected to be compatible with plenty of games at launch. This could definitely be called the year of VR headsets, as devices like the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive are all slated to enter the market soon, aside from PlayStation VR of course.

The Rift will begin its journey from March 28 onwards, whereas the HTC Vive will start shipping at the start of April. While the former has been priced at 599 USD (approx Rs 41000), the latter has been revealed to cost a whopping 799 USD (approx Rs 54000). It’ll hence be interesting to see what kind of a pricing strategy is adopted by Sony for its own virtual reality system.
