Xbox One will shun external hard drive at launch, PS4 games won’t install on them

The next generation of consoles is spurring up news on a regular basis for all kinds of reasons, with the latest one having to do with the Xbox One and PS4’s compatibility issues with external hard drives. While Microsoft had promised that its new console will provide support for game installs and downloads, the company has now informed that the said feature won’t be available at launch. The PS4 on the other hand, has been confirmed to not feature any support for game installations on external hard drives, but it will indeed have its internal hard drive replaceable.

Larry Hryb aka Major Nelson broke this news during a podcast conducted at PAX Prime this weekend. He revealed that Microsoft indeed plans this Xbox 360-like feature to be introduced later on, but at launch, it won’t be seen on the Xbox One since the team is working on ‘some other things.’ At the unveiling event of the Xbox One, Microsoft had promised that gamers will be able to expand the console’s storage over its 500GB stock space by utilizing its USB 3.0 port.

Sony’s PS4 will also ship with 500GB worth of storage space, however, its internal hard disk will be replaceable. When SCE Worldwide’s Shuhei Yoshida was asked on Twitter about whether or not the PS4 supports game installs on external hard drives, he replied with a simple ‘no.’

Both the Xbox One and the PS4 are gearing up for their launches during this holiday season. And while Sony’s has received its exact release date details, Microsoft’s is still to have its launch timetable outlined.
