This adapter connects a Wii U to a GameCube controller, supports Super Smash Bros.

In quite a bizarre yet pleasing announcement, Nintendo has announced an adapter which you can use to hook up your Wii U console to the classic GameCube controller. It will be fully functional, allowing you to jump into the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game in a nostalgic way. No word about its price or availability has been put forth as yet, but we’re hoping to hear more about it soon; perhaps at E3.

A Super Smash Bros. Invitational has been announced by Nintendo through a video, and it’s through this clip that the adapter was first unveiled. Later, the American branch of the company tweeted an image of it, thus making it fully official. The above mentioned invitational is supposed to take place on June 10 which is the date of the E3. It is at this event that we’ll get to hear more details about the adapter.

One more interesting thing to be pointed out is that the controller which can be seen in the image above bears the Super Smash Bros. logo. This could mean that Nintendo might re-release the GameCube controller to complement the launch of Super Smash Bros and the adapter.

This brawler which is also supposed to land on the 3DS later this year, is the fourth in the series which sees games having characters from various Nintendo franchises fight against each other. It was announced at 2011’s E3 and there’s still no release date out for it yet.

Although only Super Smash Bros. has been announced to feature support for the GameCube controllers via the new adapter, we don’t see why Nintendo won’t be allowing this feature for other games. Perhaps Mario Kart 8 too could get its compatibility via an update.
