Angry Birds Epic abandons bird-flinging for turn-based role-playing

After a tease which indicated a medieval theme for its next game, Rovio has revealed Angry Birds Epic finally, but much to everyone’s surprise it’s a turn-based role-playing game. Combat and crafting will both form part of this title which is set to be soft released in Australia and Canada this week through iTunes. The final version of the game will be launched worldwide for iOS, Android and Windows Phone platforms.

Angry Birds Epic

Angry Birds Epic will be seen kicking in turn-based combat, although other details on this aspect are still slim. It will offer an ‘extensive’ crafting system as well, allowing gamers to create armor, potions and weapons by using resources collected during gameplay or purchased via real currency. The video we’ve posted in the space below was released by Rovio on March 7, and was meant to be a teaser for this game. It established that the next Angry Birds game would feature a medieval theme, but like many, we too believed it to kick in the same bird-flinging gameplay model which other titles from the series possess.

And now that Angry Birds Epic has actually been unveiled to Kotaku, it has raised many eyebrows for its abandonment from Rovio’s tried and tested blueprint and the adoption of a role-playing approach. This is not the first time the studio is doing this however; past games like Angry Birds Go! and Bad Piggies have provided different experiences as well.

Angry Birds Epic will be released in an early form in Australia and Canada this week, and when finished, it will make its way into other territories.
