New Video Games Ratings Planned for the UK

Politicians and government bodies in the United Kingdom are not huge fans of video games. Whether it is the Resistance: Fall of Man and Church issue or the Manhunt 2one, they make their voice heard! Now Guardian is reporting that politicians in the UK are planning to clampdown on unsuitable video games.

Ministers are planning to bring a legally enforceable cinema-style classification system for video games. These steps are being taken as an effort to keep children from playing damaging games inappropriate for their age. There will be a lot of restrictions if the proposals are enacted. It would become illegal for shops to sell classified games to a kid under the recommended age. Besides that, the ministers will be advising parents to put the computers and consoles in kitchens and living rooms rather than children’s bedrooms.

The communications regulator in Britain, Ofcom too has come up with proposals. They plan to introduce a new British Standards Institution specification, which will let the developers of filtering products examine them against the standard designed to guard children from unsuitable or illegal content. However, companies who are able to pass this test would be able to post a child safety online kitemark.

The British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has commissioned a review on violence and video games. Former television psychologist Tanya Byron is working on it and will be submitting an official report next month. But whatever it is, gamers shouldn’t be worried about this as they have a major political figure on their side. Queen Elizabeth is hooked on to video games as she is a big fan of Nintendo Wii.
