A PS Vita System Update is now available for download to all those who’re lucky enough to have already got hold of the handheld. Dubbed v1.61, this update for the device’s software has been rolled out in preparation of tomorrow’s launch, and will add new functions as well as a few tweaks to existing applications.

With this update, the camera of the Vita will not only be usable for clicking pictures, but also for recording videos. Moreover, the Maps application will also make its way onto the device’s homescreen. According to a post on the official PlayStation blog, all gamers who now rate anything on the PS Store will be able to publish the ratings on Facebook directly.

Eric Lempel, VP, Sony Network Entertainment, wrote on the blog, “Now that some of you early adopters have PlayStation Vita in your hands, we’re going to begin keeping you posted on any changes to system software here on PlayStation Blog. In preparation for Wednesday’s wide release of PS Vita, tonight we’re making System Software Update (v1.61) available for download.”

In addition to this, the near app also receives a few changes that include the display of players’ information on the Discoveries section. It will also put on view a list of online IDs of up to 100 players that gamers have encountered, along with the number of times that they have interacted with each player. Each profile screen will be accessible by tapping the online IDs of players.

The PS Vita System Update can be downloaded now by selecting the ‘System Update’ option in the ‘Settings’ menu or by connecting the handheld to a PS3 or a PC/Mac.
