Sony Computer Entertainment America or SCEA has officially announced the launch of Resistance: Retribution exclusively for the PSP in North America. The game, developed by Sony Bend, brings a twist to the Resistance franchise with a third person perspective and an all new cast and story just for PSP gamers. Sony Bend has previously worked on titles for the PSP such as Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror and Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow, and was rumored to be developing Syphon Filter 5.
Players can connect their PSP systems to the Sony PS3 via USB cable and utilize many features such as the Resistance Connect. There are two modes available, Resistance: Retribution Plus and Resistance: Retribution Infected. In Infected mode, players can earn certain abilities like breathing underwater and health that regenerates, a new skin, a different storyline and the HE .44 Magnum, a powerful gun with explosive bullets. With the Resistance: Retribution Plus feature, players can use the wireless dualshock 3 controller as a controller for their PSP system.
Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing at SCEA stated, “Resistance Connect is a significant step in the future of the PSP system. This PSP exclusive title demonstrates technology that has not previously been demonstrated on a portable platform, allowing gamers to play a console quality game at home, then immediately continue the experience on the road. Combined with the intense single player campaign, innovative multiplayer modes, and the Infect option, Resistance: Retribution provides gamers with a lot of options on how they want to play and where they want to play.”
The story of the game somewhat merges aspects of both Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 and brings in a new character James Grayson, a former British Marine, to the franchise. Grayson is hired by a French resistance group and is determined to kill every last one of the Chimera. During the course of the game, he finds out more about the Chimera and the Cloven and discovers answers to some of the questions from Resistance 2.
The online play in Resistance: Retribution has 5 multiplayer modes allowing for up to 8 players to play. Players can enjoy the multiplayer on one of five different maps while they play deathmatch, team deathmatch or capture the flag. In addition to these common modes of play, Sony Bend has developed two unique modes, Containment and Assimilation. In Containment, players must control the enemies’ coolant nodes to overheat and damage their opponents’ reactor, while in Assimilation, the one Cloven player must kill the seven Maquis soldiers to bring them to the Cloven side.
