Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection release date to fall in June

For those who are yet to get acquainted with the MGS phenomenon, there wouldn’t be a better opportunity to do so than the Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection which was announced yesterday by Konami. This PS3-exclusive package contains a compilation of games and other materials, and has only been announced for North and South America as of now. It is slated to hit retail this June, but still remains without a price tag.

Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection

This set is being launched by Konami to commemorate the 25th anniversary celebrations of the franchise which had commenced last year. Those eager to get a lowdown on its contents can try to soak this in. It comprises 1998‘s MGS, the HD versions of MGS 2, MGS 3 and MGS: Peace Walker, apart from MGS: VR Missions and the Trophies-infused MGS 4. And that’s not all, the MSX versions of MG and MG 2 will also be thrown into the mix alongside two digital graphic novels by Ashley Wood.

The idea of such a compilation seems to have emerged through Konami’s urge to provide fans of the MGS series with the chance to relive it. Says, Tomoyuki Tsuboi, who’s the president of Konami Digital Entertainment, that it allows hardened MGS aficionados to experience the series from beginning to end on one console. In a way, it would grant them an idea of how the franchise gained such massive player and critical acclaim over the years, he hopes.

Having come into existence in 1987, this series was pioneered by Japanese poster boy Hideo Kojima, who has left an inscrutable mark on the gaming industry through his work. Over 33 million units of MG titles have been sold all over the world till date, and with the extremely anticipated MGS 5 in the works for the coming years, the number is all set to get a huge boost. Its innovative stealth mechanics, cinematic cut scenes, intricate storylines, wacky humor and a number of other aspects make it the unique franchise that it is.
