Sony to support PS3 into 2015 at least

According to PlayStation VP of hardware marketing, John Koller, Sony will support the PS3 well into 2015, and possibly even longer. He is optimistic about the lineup of content coming for the console and sees no reason why the PS3 should drop into the background.

“We are increasingly bullish on the PS3’s prospects not only this year but over the next few years,” Koller says. He continues, “A lot of great content is coming. And over the next 2-3 years, the PS3 has got an incredible lineup.”

The new PS3 model comes in 250GB and 500GB HDD versions priced at 270 USD and 300 USD respectively as well as a 12GB flash memory variant for the UK. Japan meanwhile, is scheduled to get it in a white hue, in addition to the standard black exterior. India is on course to receive the new model in time for Diwali.

“We’re going to continue supporting the PS3 for the next few years. Absolutely. And we’re going to continue supporting it not only that long, but as long as there is a development spigot that’s running hot. And I can tell you right now, the development spigot for PS3 is very hot. A lot of great games coming. Same thing with PS2…it’s kind of stuck around as that old warrior, many years after its launch. But there’s still games launching for it,” Koller says in an interview with Gamespot.

In the interview, he also elaborates on the reasoning behind the pricing of the new Super Slim PS3 model and why he believes bundling the console with Uncharted 3 makes complete sense. Fans can expect the PS3 to be supported well into the next generation of consoles, just like the PS2, which still gets a few games every now and then.
