Sony’s Motion Controller for the PS3 is a “couple of generations” forward

The PS3 and Xbox 360 are two consoles with immense gaming power, while the Nintendo Wii features its characteristic motion control remote. In a bid to provide its users with a more interactive and fun gaming experience, Microsoft announced its Project Natal. Even Sony unveiled its motion control device with PS Eye functionality.

Now SCEE’s Vice President of Research and Development, Paul Holman tells Eurogamer in an interview that the motion control peripheral from Sony is “another generation forward, or even a couple of generations” ahead of the motion controllers already in the market.

Speaking about the device, Holman says, “I know in certain games or applications which are out there, people had to sort of fluff it to make it real for consumers. But this stuff is super-accurate and the impact of that is incredible. I think you have to play with it to realise what it will do to games.”

Commenting on the level of precision and accuracy incorporated, head of developer services, Kish Hirani said, “What I personally love is to be able to write your name. Grab a mouse and write your name; it’s difficult. The mouse uses very old motion-tracking technology, and to be able to write your name on the screen – that’s the precision you’re getting. You’ve physically got a chalk in your hand, you’re in front of the blackboard and you’re writing. That’s the level of precision involved.”

The motion control gaming peripheral from Sony is expected to release in the spring of 2010, and Holman confirms that everything is right on track from a hardware standpoint.
