As Diablo III gamers continue to grumble over the extended absence of the elusive PvP patch, Blizzard has announced that an expansion for the game is currently in the making. Despite of the discontent among gamers, this title has turned out to be a huge success for publisher Activision Blizzard, and the immense acclaim from critics and players alike that had greeted it post its launch only explains the reason for its accomplishment.
As noted by IGN, an earnings call from Activision Blizzard was held recently for its third quarter business in the current fiscal year. There, the company’s CEO, Mike Morhaime confirmed the existence of an expansion which is currently being planned by it. No release window for it has been mentioned as yet. He did reveal that the quality of this expansion as well as its gameplay is the top priority for the developer currently.
Meanwhile, news has chimed in that more than 10 million copies of the game have been traded off to this date. These ‘record-shattering Diablo III sales’ as Activision CEO, Bobby Kotick prefers to call them have been disclosed to be the primary factors resulting in the publisher’s earnings so far this year. It has also been stated that the title is the ‘#1 bestselling game in dollars and units on the PC in the US and Europe’ ever since its launch in May this year.
This action RPG with dungeon crawl and hack and slash elements is the third iteration to the incredibly popular Diablo series which started with the first game way back in 1996. It was released for PC and Mac then, whereas a PlayStation version came out in 1998. This was followed by sequel in 2000 which expanded upon the benchmarks set by its predecessor, and delivered completely new experiences, becoming one of the most loved PC games of all time. It also received an expansion in 2001 called Lord of Destruction.
The expansion for Diablo III however is still to be dated, and we’ll have more on it when new information is out. Gamers can now purchased this title digitally as well as in the form of retail copies for PC and Mac.
