The Last Of Us Almost Got A Prequel Game Featuring This Season Finale Character

The Last Of Us - Part 1

Following the season finale of HBO’s The Last of Us, a new bittersweet tidbit has emerged for fans of the game series. A separate prequel game exploring the backstory of Ellie’s mother was in the works but unfortunately, nothing came out of it.

Spoilers for The Last of Us Season 1 Episode 9 to follow.

This character named Anna made her debut in the season finale of the TV show. The flashback showed how she tried to escape from an infected while in labour and gave birth shortly after being bitten.

This went on to suggest that Ellie’s immunity had something to do with the way in which these events unfolded. Anna was then shown to convince Marlene to raise Ellie before asking to be shot by her so that she wouldn’t turn into an infected.

The Last of Us creative director Neil Druckmann has told the Kinda Funny podcast that he wanted to give Anna a bigger backstory through a video game. He also mentioned that this game wasn’t to be developed by Naughty Dog but by an external studio.

Druckmann said that he was discussing this idea with an unnamed developer for “quite a while” before the talks fell apart. Those hoping that such a project could be conceived again in the near future should not keep their hopes high since he spoke nothing on that matter.

Moreover, Naughty Dog’s focus right now is on an unannounced game that’s most likely neither from The Last of Us nor from Uncharted universes. Fans have been speculating that it’s got a fantasy setting based on evidence spotted in the updated visuals of Last Of Us Part 1.

Moreover, the studio is also set to release a new Last of Us multiplayer game this year. Expect to hear a lot more about this project in the coming months.
