Sony Reveals Design And Specs Of PlayStation VR2 Headset

PSVR 2

January saw Sony confirming that a PlayStation VR2 headset is under development and that’s also when the company showcased how its controllers will look. And while neither the actual headset’s design nor its main specs were shared back then, they are now available for everyone to gander at.

PlayStation VR2 is the official name of the headset and its controller will be called PlayStation VR2 Sense. In keeping with the design philosophy of the PS5, both these devices have been granted a white-and-black colour scheme. Sony says that their “orb” shape signifies the 360-degree view they will enable gamers to explore.

The new headset is much lighter than the original PSVR and its other comfort features include a lens adjustment dial and a new vent design. It will connect to the PS5 using a single USB Type-C cable and more importantly, it will work without any external camera.

The PlayStation VR2 will offer a 110-degree field of view and render its visuals in 4K HDR. 90/120Hz refresh rates will be available, along with other technologies like foveated rendering, 3D Audio, and advanced haptic feedback.

This headset will come with integrated cameras for what Sony calls inside-out tracking. This is what will help the PSVR 2 track your movements and the direction you look at without the need for an external camera.

Only one PlayStation VR2 game has been revealed so far in the form of Horizon Call of the Mountain. Unveiled this January with a short trailer, it comes as a spin-off of the original series and is being developed by Guerrilla Games along with Firesprite. Dev kits are indeed accessible to developers so expect a lot more games to be revealed soon.

There is no word on the price and release date of the PlayStation VR2.
