Xbox One gets backwards compatibility and UI update next month

Microsoft’s Xbox One console is all set to be showered with two great offerings next month. The first will be its much demanded backwards compatibility feature, while the second one will be its yearly UI update that has been laced with tons of fresh features.

The release date for the update that adds both the anticipated goodies to the Xbox One has been announced to be November 12. Thanks to the console’s new backwards compatibility trait, owners will be able to fire up their Xbox 360 games again.

However, the catch is that only a select few titles can be played right now. Among them as Gears of War, Borderlands and Mass Effect. Microsoft has started a feedback program where fans can vote for the next games they wish to see being made backwards compatible.

The final decision on whether to release these old games for the new console will be taken by the publishers though. As for the titles that are currently leading the race, the number one spot has been grabbed by Call of Duty: Black Ops II, with Red Dead Redemption and Skyrim coming in at the second and third.

Besides backwards compatibility, the update on November 12 will even give the Xbox One console’s UI a huge overhaul. The interface will be more along the lines of the one featured in Microsoft’s latest PC operating system, Windows 10. That also means that the voice-based digital assistant Cortana will be seen making its way to the console for the first time.

For those unaware of how the backwards compatibility feature on the Xbox One will work, it will automatically make games available for free download if they are present in your Xbox Live libraries. As for those titles which exist on discs, they will need to be inserted into the console for the download to start.
