PS5 Already Has A New Model But It’s Not What You’re Thinking

PS5 DualSense

Sony’s PS5 is barely a year old but its makers have quietly put out a new model of the console. However, no significant hardware changes have made their way onto this machine. It seems it has been released only to make the installation of the console’s stand easier. This little change is somehow accompanied by a weight reduction as well.

The PS5, as you know, comes with a dual-orientation stand that allows you to place it vertically or horizontally. While attaching this stand for a horizontal orientation is straightforward, the vertical position requires you to use a screw that’s hidden inside the stand itself. It’s this screw that has been changed in the new model.

It has been spotted in Australia by the folks over at Press-Start. The new PS5 falls under the CFI-1100 series as opposed to the CFI-1000 series of its predecessor. Its screw has a nub at the top which negates the need for a screwdriver when you’re attaching the stand for a vertical orientation.

Seemingly, no big hardware changes have been made internally but the console has somehow got a weight reduction as well, having gone from 3.9kgs to 3.6kgs. It’s unclear where these 300gms have gone and only a teardown will be able to answer the question.

Amidst all this, the shortage of the PS5 still remains an issue all over the world. And despite this, it went on to be the fastest-selling console in the US this April. Sony had sold over 4.5 million units globally in 2020 alone.

The PS5 is sold in the form of two variants, with one offering a disc drive and the other being a digital-only version. They are priced at $499 and $399, respectively.
