PS5 Now Fastest-Selling Console In US History

PS5

Sony’s PS5 has now become the fastest-selling console in US history in terms of both unit and dollar sales. According to games industry analysts NPD Group, the console has managed to achieve this feat after just five months of being in the market. That’s quite remarkable especially considering the supply issues that have plagued the console ever since it was launched.

NPD’s Mat Piscatella revealed the news via his Twitter account, where he also mentioned that the Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform in both units and dollars during the month of March. In fact, In the Switch was the unit sales leader in the first quarter of 2021, while the PS5 ranked first in hardware dollar sales in the US.

In 2020 alone, the PS5 had managed to sell 4.5 million units globally, and in February this year, Sony announced that it was ready to achieve its goal of selling 7.6 million PS5s by the end of March. The Japanese firm has also said that it aims to sell over 14.8 million units of the console in its current fiscal that ends in March 2022.

Despite all this, there are still severe supply issues with the PS5 in the market. The global chip shortage is a major reason for the same and it is showing no signs of vanishing anytime soon.

Recently, the PS5 was blessed with a major update that finally allowed owners to store games on external hard drives. The update also added features like the ability to pre-download title updates, 120Hz support for 1080p monitors, new Game Base functions, and much more.

Meanwhile, we’ve also learned that this PS5 update has improved the way the DualSense controller vibrates when playing PS4 games.
