PS5 Update With External Storage Support Now Live, Plenty Of Other Features Added

PS5 External Storage

If you’ve managed to get a PS5 amidst all the global shortage, here’s some good news for you. An update has been rolled out for the Sony console that allows you to transfer your games to external storage devices. The promised SSD upgrade support is still a no-show, but a number of other interesting features have been introduced via this new fresh update.

External storage devices won’t allow you to play your games through them but you can indeed store the games that you’re not currently playing and get them back whenever you wish to dive into them again. It is always faster to grab a game from your USB drive than re-downloading it from the PS Store.

This update also brings with it Cross-generation Share Play, which allows PS4 and PS5 players to Share Play together while chatting in parties. Anyone with a PS5 can now let their friends on the PS4 view their game screen, or even try out a PS5 game through Share Play. And this also works the other way round. Following this update, a selection of your friends’ joinable game sessions will appear on the dashboards of both the PS5 and the PS4, making way for more gameplay opportunities together.

Game Base, the dedicated hangout place for you and your online friends, also gets a new feature. It now gives you quick access to important content and features, while also allowing you to easily switch between Parties and Friends. There’s even the option of turning notifications on or off for each of the parties you’re in.

This PS5 update lets the console pre-download game updates if the “automatic updates” setting is enabled. This means you can start playing the latest version of a game immediately after the update’s release.

A few hardware upgrades are also part of the update. Your PS5 will now automatically switch off HDR features when it detects non-HDR content. Furthermore, 120Hz support for 1080p PC monitors is being added, aside from the option to link your console and TV’s power, so your TV will switch on when you power up your PS5.
