Steam controller gets updated with one more thumbstick

While Valve has not gone official with it, the Steam controller prototype appears to have been given yet another revamp by it. This time around, the device has been blessed with an analog thumbstick. It’s unclear right now whether this will be the final version which will be shipped next year, and hence we’ll just have to wait and watch if Valve has any more surprises in store for us.

Steam Controller

As reveled by Engadget, Steam Database as well as users of Facepunch forums were able to pull out the above posted image through the latest Steam client beta. There is no doubt that it’s indeed Valve’s controller which will be sold to complement the Steam Machine platform consisting of pre-built yet upgradable gaming computers equipped with the company’s very own SteamOS operating system.

Valve’s been introducing us to exciting new controller features and then taking them away from the beginning. When it first showed us the prototype, it featured an innovative touchscreen of its own, but the second iteration abandoned it for various reasons. This variant added two symmetrical sets of ABXY face buttons, but even that has now been changed by swapping one set with the thumbstick.

The Steam controller from Valve is distinguished by its clickable trackpads which have been equipped with haptic feedback. As these remain the only main distinct attributes which the much awaited device now owns, there’s a slight possibility that its maker will not do away with them in the final release. Here’s hoping for the best.
