Oculus Rift in a pickle as production of components ceases

In a pretty unusual turn of events, dev kits of next-gen VR technology, the Oculus Rift are running out of stock. The reason for the same is that the components that are used to build the product have ceased production. The consequence is that the company will be forced to suspend sales of its developer units region by region until it finds a solution to the matter.

An Oculus community manager took to Reddit in order to convey this message. Apparently, certain components used in the Oculus Rift developer kit are no longer being manufactured, which has resulted in the company not being able to produce additional kits. Although some stock of the materials is still available, the creators are fast running out of it. This has necessitated the company to look for alternate sources for their materials, which might take some time.

This is why sales of the dev kits are being suspended for some countries. Right now, the Oculus Rift is only being sold in the US, Canada, Europe, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Switzerland and Norway. It is being said that only 50,000 dev kits now remain with the company for distribution among developers from these countries.

For those not in the loop, Oculus Rift is a virtual reality head-mounted display meant primarily for gaming. In 2012, it had taken to Kickstarter for raising funding for its production, and had managed to raise $2.4 million in total. Available only to developers right now, it’s supposed to receive a consumer edition either this year or in 2015.
