The Super Mario Bros. Movie Smashes Box Office Records

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

The Super Mario Bros. Movie has turned out to be a blockbuster for Universal Pictures, Illumination, and Nintendo, smashing various box office records worldwide. With a $377 million grab in ticket sales over the opening weekend, it has the biggest worldwide opening of all time for an animated movie.

With this number, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has beaten the worldwide gross of $358 million that was earned by Frozen 2 in 2019. In the US alone, the film earned $146.4 million during the Friday-Sunday period.

And by the looks of it, The Super Mario Bros. Movie looks all set to beat the lifetime earnings of last year’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which is the fourth highest-grossing movie based on a video game.

2016’s Warcraft, with its $439 million in lifetime earnings, currently owns the record for being the highest-grossing movie based on a video game of all time. It’s safe to say that the record is soon to be broken by The Super Mario Bros. Movie in the coming weeks.

April 5 is when the film was launched in theatres worldwide. The animated feature is fueled by an ensemble cast that includes Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, and Fred Armisen.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a hit among fans from day one, although the same cannot be said about the critics. Currently, its Rotten Tomatoes (aggregate of reviews from various prominent critics) score stands at 57%, while the audience score stands at 96%.

With so many records smashed and so many well on their way to being smashed, a sequel announcement isn’t too far away. The Super Mario Bros. Movie has several tracks that can be expanded to form the plot of the next movie in the franchise.
