Hideo Kojima expected Metal Gear Solid to not ‘sell at all’

Metal Gear Solid is one of the biggest entertainment franchises in the world right now, and has given the gaming industry some of its most coveted pieces of art, but its creator seemingly had no clue that this could become a possibility some day. In fact, he had the exact opposite idea in his mind when the first ever 3D title from the series was released back in 1998. Hideo Kojima himself revealed that he did now expect the game to sell at all.

This bit came to light though a recent Q&A on Twitch which was focused on the iconic game designer. According to GameSpot, he said on the stream that during the development of Metal Gear Solid for the PS one, he had very low expectations from the offering. But as fate would have it, it turned out to be a massive hit, shipping over six million copies and grabbing tremendous accolades from gamers and critics alike.

“Neither me nor anyone else expected Metal Gear Solid to sell at all. So I was fortunate, because I didn’t have to think, ‘I have to sell this game this much,’ so pretty much all I did was put in that game all the things I really like,” Kojima appears to have said. Since the launch of this game, the MGS series has only seen an upward growth. Till date, over 33 million Metal Gear Solid titles have been sold, and that number is set to be inflated a great deal this year.

That’s because Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is slated to hit consoles soon, and so its massive cousin, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
