After its Japanese screening, the movie was released in North America and Europe for home viewing on DVD, Blu-ray and UMD. Overall more than one and a half million copies of the movie were sold in spite of the global lull in the economy. The Resident Evil series, first released in 1996, has since sold more than 35.5 units worldwide in total.

The Resident Evil series was jolted to life in 1996 with the first Resident Evil game for the PlayStation which was soon followed by Resident Evil 2. This spawned the Resident Evil movie in 2002. The survival horror series has come a long way since then, with yet more movies and videogames, as tends to happen with such a gripping franchise.
