Romero Games

John Romero, the game designer known for creating some of the most influential FPS games of all time, including Doom, has announced a new game. This offering will be based on an “original, new IP” and will be developed by his company Romero Games.

The legendary game designer shared this news through a tweet, revealing that a “major publisher” is involved. The post also acted as a message for the expansion of Romero Games, which is looking to fill new vacancies.

That alone tells us that the game is in its early stages of development. We also know that it’s being created using Unreal Engine 5. The last project that Romero Games worked on was the mafia strategy game Empire of Sin, published by Paradox Interactive.

John Romero is known for pioneering the FPS genre with games like Doom, Wolfenstein, and Quake back in the 1990s. After founding many other studios, later on, he went on to co-found Romero Games with his wife Brenda Romero back in 2015.

In 2019, the studio released Sigil, an unofficial fifth episode to the original Doom. It features nine missions, each with a deathmatch version. The popularity of this mod led to Bethesda eventually releasing in the form of a patch for the console versions of Doom.

And just last year, Romero revealed that a Sigil 2 is also under development, to be run on top of Doom 2, which was first released in 1994. The last main entry to the Doom series was released in 2020 in the form of Doom Eternal. Apart from a single-player campaign it also introduced a new multiplayer mode to the series in the Battlemode.

There’s much to look forward to in the newly announced project by John Romero so we’ll keep an eye out for any new details regarding the same.
