Here’s How Borderlands Cross Platform Play Works

Borderlands 3

Cross platform support for Borderlands 3 has landed finally but with a catch. PlayStation gamers cannot participate in crossplay, most probably due to the restrictions that Sony puts on publishers. If you need all the details regarding this new addition, here’s an in-depth look at them.

June 24 was when the Borderlands cross platform support was introduced by Gearbox through an update. Thanks to the patch, Borderlands 3 players can now play with each other across the Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Mac, Stadia, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

This is made possible by the SHiFT Matchmaking system, which you’ll need to opt into. Once the update is applied, the option to opt-in will automatically appear when you run the game. Regardless of whether you opt-in or not, you will still be required to set a Crossplay Display Name, which is mandatory for the SHiFT Matchmaking functionality.

In order to take advantage of Borderlands cross platform support, your Crossplay Display Name must not already be in use by another Borderlands 3 player, must be between 3 to 16 characters long, and must start with a letter.

Regarding the non-arrival of cross platform support for Borderlands 3 on PlayStation consoles, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford said, “Bad news: For certification, we have been required by the publisher to remove crossplay support for PlayStation consoles.” A while ago, some documents revealed during the Epic vs Apple antitrust trial showed that Sony charges developers to enable cross-platform play. And this is likely the reason why 2K Games has opted out of including PlayStation platforms in its cross platform list.

As we said, Borderlands cross platform support is live now and can be experienced after updating to the latest version of the game.
