And to all those who feel the need to experience what it’d be like to watch the Earth after the end of all life on it, these games come across as addictive pieces of entertainment.

So many titles have been spawned under the post apocalyptic genre of late, it was a tricky task to pick out the best of these offerings. Nevertheless, we managed to settle in on eight of the finest and here they are.

1 – Darksiders:

Darksiders

Darksiders combines God of War-like action with Zelda-like adventure, rendering you a single-player offering that is hard to get your hands off. Players assume the role of War from the biblical tale of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The expansive environments of this title echo a sense of dynamism which is present throughout the whole campaign. We are eagerly awaiting the sequel of this game which is supposed to take place in the same timeline as this one, but has its focus on a different character.

2 – S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat:

We are all familiar with the horrors that were brought about by the Chernobyl disaster. Offering an alternate take on the disastrous incident, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat, features some extremely imaginative visuals which have been rendered to near perfection by the folks over at GSC Game World, which is also responsible for other games in the series. This title comprises a wide array of gameplay elements which fall under both RPG as well as survival horror genres.

3 – Left 4 Dead 2:

Among all the different types of situations you’ll find in the post apocalyptic games, the ones involving zombies are perhaps the most enjoyable because we can’t think of anyone who doesn’t like putting the undead out of their misery. This game places you in the shoes of the few survivors of a huge zombie apocalypse and takes you on a horror-filled adventure which lays emphasis on co-op. The post apocalyptic visuals that make their way into Dead Rising 2 have been beautifully stylized by the developers, to go along with the game’s horror-comedy image. While moving through the massive army of zombies, you’ll be encountering a multitude of unique situations which insist on some long gaming hours. This title is available for the PS3, Xbox 360 as well as PC.

5 – Resistance 3:

Insomniac Games’ incredible rendition of a 1950s America hit by an alien invasion still flashes in front of our eyes when we think about this PS3 exclusive. The sepia-toned graphics and some well crafted situations in the post apocalyptic world dominated by the Chimera prove to be mind-blowing at times. The first-rate cutscenes from this title depict a group of people holed up inside the confinements of a few zones of houses, reminding you of reminiscences surrounding the Nazi holocaust.

6 – Fallout New Vegas:

Fallout New Vegas

This game had entered our roster of the best post apocalyptic games the minute we decided to conjure up such a list. The brilliant alternate universes depicted in each of the RPGs from the series can be easily marked as exquisite pieces of art. Fallout: New Vegas is the newest among the lot, inviting you into awe inspiring, role-playing madness delivered by the bosses of this genre – Bethesda.

7 – Gears of War 3:

How could we have possibly missed out this one? One of last year’s highest rated games, Gears of War 3 is a poignant take on the obliteration brought about by the war against the Locusts. Each and every location of this game mirrors a sense of post apocalyptic havoc, which is given boost by its heartrending story and not to mention, excellent gameplay. This catalog of post apocalyptic games would have simply been incomplete without a mention of Gears of War 3.

8 – Rage:

Rage

Even before Rage hit the block, it had already generated quite some hype around it, owing to the sheer fact that it was being developed by industry veterans, id Software. And the title managed to live up to each and every expectation that was wandering around it. The 2029 world hit by the Apophis asteroid was brilliantly brought alive by the developer using its proprietary id Tech 5 engine. With destructed environments, punk artworks, a brilliant skybox and extensive locales, Rage was arguably the best looking game of 2011. A first-person shooter at heart, it also kicks in vehicular combat and some RPG elements.
