Gran Turismo 6 now official, coming to PS3 this holiday season

Although a definite Gran Turismo 6 release date still remains out of reach, we have confirmation coming in from Sony that the game will be launched this holiday season. And while the PS4 too has been slated to arrive in markets during the same period, the racing game has chosen the PS3 as its only platform, leaving fans perplexed. It wasn’t as if we didn’t know this was coming, but a lot of folks around the gaming community were indeed expecting the title to be cross-gen.

As had been speculated, it was announced at the 15-year anniversary celebration event held yesterday at the Silverstone circuit in London. Taking the ‘Real Driving Simulator’ inheritance of the series forward, this new game will be seen introducing a plethora of fresh additions. It will be built using a new compact game engine, and Sony has also announced that its developers will be infusing it with several social and community features targeted towards smartphones and tablets.

The game will bear all the cars and tracks from its predecessor, while the addition of new rides will take the tally to 1,200 at launch. Moreover, fresh wheels will of course keep being added to the experience through DLC. And they will be accompanied by 7 fresh tracks apart from the previous ones. One of them will be the famous Silverstone Circuit, and gamers can expect regular downloadable tracks as well.

Developer Polyphony Digital has gone on to reveal that its last title, GT5, managed to sell more than 10 million copies since its 2010 launch. That’s an incredible feat considering that the game was only available for the PS3 and no other platform. Series-creator Kazunori Yamauchi has expressed that with the latest offering, his studio is committed towards making the experience more flexible and expandable.

The GT series had come into existence back in 1997 when its first entry was launched for the PlayStation. Since then, four sequels came out in 1999, 2001, 2005 and 2010. And later this year, the much loved franchise will be blessed with its latest iteration, Gran Turismo 6. We’ll have more on the game when added details are revealed.
