Facebook changed its name to Meta and the event that saw this announcement also made it known that a version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is under development for the company’s Oculus Quest 2 VR headset. This VR version of the game has apparently been “many years in the making,” however, no videos have been shared yet.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will allow fans to re-enter Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas in VR form and there’s no question that it will feature the updated graphics that will form part of the Definitive Edition announced recently. A release date for this VR version hasn’t been shared yet.
This will be the first time that a GTA game will get the VR treatment; officially that is. Modders have already created a GTA 5 VR experience, while there’s even a modded version of Red Dead Redemption 2 that lets players experience the game in VR.
Just in case you missed it, Rockstar is also hard at work giving a remaster treatment to three of its PS2 era games. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition will feature graphically updated versions of GTA III, GTA Vice City, and GTA San Andreas.
These three games will get a completely rebuilt lighting system, improved shadows, upgraded character and vehicle models, and higher resolution textures, among other things. The Definitive Edition is scheduled to arrive on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch this November 11.
Meanwhile, there are no murmurs going on right now about GTA 6, which is also believed to be under development in Rockstar’s stables. Last we heard about it through a leak, the game is apparently being targeted for a 2024-2025 release with an expanded version of the Vice City map as its setting.
