GTA: Tokyo was almost a reality, GTA 6 is in production says report

A game called Grand Theft Auto: Tokyo could very well have become a reality, says a source who claims to have inside information from Rockstar Games. What’s all the more interesting however, is that work on GTA 6 has apparently been started by its developers.

It has come to light that Rockstar had sent out a team in Tokyo in order to conduct research for setting a GTA game in the Japanese city. This apparently happened around the time of GTA III and GTA: Vice City, but the game never really took off for several reasons.

The prime one among them was that the road system in the city was seen as ‘problematic.’ The above mentioned source has told TechRadar that moving the series to a city outside of the United States presented other problems as well, including major alterations to the cars and brands that are portrayed.

So Grand Theft Auto: Tokyo remains legend and nothing else. Meanwhile, there’s some news about the inevitable GTA 6 as well. It is believed that Rockstar has started ‘preliminary’ work on this title already, but is yet to finalize what city from the United States it will be set it.

Given that GTA 4 went back to New York City (Liberty City) and GTA 5 went back to Los Angeles (Los Santos), there’s a very good chance GTA 6 will be going back to Miami (Vice City) for its setting. Let us now wait for further leaks to see whether this speculation holds any ground.

As for when you can expect to play GTA 6, given the massively long development cycle of games from the series, don’t keep any hopes about seeing it in the markets for at least three or four more years.
