The Evil Within unveiled by Bethesda as Shinji Mikami’s next game

After teasing us with bits of videos for the past few days, Bethesda has finally taken the veil off The Evil Within, its new survival horror offering, being developed under the guidance of none other than Resident Evil-creator, Shinji Mikami. It is a cross-gen game, which means that it shall be released by the publisher for current generation as well as next generation platforms. Details about the latter are obviously under wraps, but we can safely assume that it is slated to hit the PS4 and the Xbox 720, apart from the confirmed PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

A gory yet interesting live-action trailer has been introduced by the makers, and can be spotted in the space below. The development duties are being handled by Mikami’s very own Tango Gameworks, which was purchased by Bethesda in 2010. Not much was known about the game, but thanks to the folks over at Gematsu, some important details have indeed come to the fore. According to the site, Bethesda Japan has posted crucial information about the game’s story and other aspects. As far as the narrative is concerned, it revolves around a certain Detective Sebastian and his partner who arrive at the scene of a mass murder, only to discover a strangely powerful force residing there. Gruesome killings of his fellow officers follow, but Sebastian somehow gets spared, with him just losing his consciousness and finding himself lying in a place infested with monsters. He now has the dual task of escaping the location as fast as possible, and at the same time, trying to get hold of what’s going on around him.

It is being claimed that this game is a return to the ‘pure survival horror’ genre, perhaps in a bid to remind fans about the classic Resident Evil games which Mikami had shaped. Traps and puzzles will of course be present within it, but another important revelation is that Silent Hill-like transforming environments which depend upon player actions also beckon gamers in this title.
