Mega Man is back but not exactly, Mighty No. 9 is a spiritual successor [video] [Update]

The Mega Man is a franchise owned by Capcom, and its fans have been demanding a full-fledged game from the series for quite some time now, only to receive almost nothing. Keiji Inafune, who was the co-designer of the Mega Man character back in the days, is now out of Capcom, and hence can’t make a game based on the superhero. In comes Mighty No. 9, a somewhat similar title bearing a character who will have the genes of Mega Man, and will be released in 2015.

Mighty No. 9 promises classic Japanese side-scrolling action, and is live now on Kickstarter looking for a funding of 900,000 USD. Inafune and his team consisting of veteran Mega Man developers announced this title at PAX Prime yesterday. It thrusts players into the shoes of Beck, ninth in a line of powerful robots who are not affected by a computer virus which has created a havoc among other mechanized creatures. Six big stages will form part of the whole affair, while Kickstarter stretch goals will guarantee more.

Just like in Mega Man games, you will be able to steal powers from defeatred enemies and even select the order in which you face the bosses. If the goal of 900,000 USD is reached, Mighty No. 9 will be launched for PC only, however, if the funding stretches over the said amount, other platforms will be included. 1.35 million USD will bring it to Mac and Linux, whereas 2.5 million USD will promise PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U versions.

Seeing the popularity of Mega Man among fans and the fact that over 785,000 USD have already been raised with 29 more days to go for the campaign to end, the stretch goals for Mighty No. 9 seems easily achievable. Head over here if you wish to back the project with your cash.
