Watch Dogs 2 does not have one of Ubisoft’s most loved mechanics

Watch Dogs 2

Watch Dogs 2, which was one of the highlights of Ubisoft’s E3 presser, has been confirmed to not feature the tower gameplay mechanic which is a staple of almost all of the company’s open world games. This particular trait was created to allow players to unlock missions in new areas.

This also means that progression within Watch Dogs 2 is not related to you’re your story missions or set locations like towers. It has in fact been linked to your count of virtual followers, a feature that will act as sort of an XP system. You can earn followers by completing activities and making discoveries in San Francisco.

Towers have formed part of Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry titles since years, and it was hence no surprise to see them making their way into the original Watch Dogs. But its sequel wants to take a different route, and this may indicate that the same may also be the case for upcoming titles from the two aforementioned series.

The focus in Watch Dogs 2 has been set on followers. Each time you get new ones, it’s like you are unlocking the DedSec hivemind. This means new knowledge, operations and co-op missions are made available to you. And this is how the progression system in this title works.

The game is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal for the PS4, the Xbox One and PC right now. It is set in a futuristic version of San Francisco, and has you take control of protagonist Marcus Holloway, a hacker who works with the hacking group DedSec to take down the city’s advanced surveillance system.
