PSP Hits the 70 Million Units Sales Mark Worldwide

SCE launched the PSP in 2004 and since then, the device has managed to allure a large number of gaming enthusiasts worldwide. Recently revealed figures seem to speak for themselves. SCE announced that 70 million units of the PSP have been sold all over the world as of April 27, 2011.

There’s no denying that the PSP offered a new dimension to the gaming market with improved ways of enjoying digital entertainment. This included online games with family and friends through a wire free LAN feature. By the fall of 2008, PSP users were able to access the PlayStation Store with wireless internet that enabled users to download games. The video delivery service offered users downloadable movie contents for their PSP. ‘Minis’ granted a range of new downloadable games which were exclusively available through digital distribution on the PlayStation Store.

More than 3,200 titles on UMDs are available around the globe, with sales of cumulative software reaching 298 million units as of March 2011. ‘Game Archive’ titles feature original PS games and downloadable versions of UMD titles are available for download. New software releases are planned by third party and SCE Worldwide Studios for the device. Many models of the PSP were also launched with improved features, while maintaining the core features of the original device.

With the PlayStation Vita launched at the E3 this year, portable gaming fun doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down anytime soon.
