Sony Acquires Patent for Remote Control Car using PSP

Sony has filed a patent for a remote control car, which is controlled by the Sony PSP using its wireless capabilities. The car, or the theoretical prototype as it stands, is fitted with a camera so that the user can navigate obstacles in its path and have some fun with the occasional kitty-cat. Just recently there were rumors of the PSP2.

Siliconera reports that the camera on the car beams back video to the PSP so that users can save a movie and upload it to a website. Sony is also thinking of imparting a sound system to the car so that you can play engine noises or whatever sounds or music you like. The user will be able to load these sounds onto the car’s memory.

We hear that this car will also be able to race around, within “augmented reality zones”. These zones must be physically defined by PSP owners, using virtual markers and paths. When the car is in the augmented reality area it sends a control signal to the PSP and can be moved around. But the instant it leaves the zone, it stops sending the control signal and cannot be moved. According to the patent, the augmented reality zones can be made to display the actual environment or replace objects in it, with computer generated images of the player’s choice.
