Sony Delays the PS3 Motion Controller Until Fall 2010

Sony’s tentatively-named Motion Controller for the PS3 made huge waves when it was revealed last year, and Sony said that the device would launch in the spring of 2010. Now Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that the release of the new Motion Controller for the PS3 will be delayed until the fall of 2010. It is now scheduled to release in Japan, Asian regions and countries, North America and Europe and the PAL territories this fall, along with an extensive line-up of software titles.

“We have decided to release the Motion Controller in fall 2010 when we will be able to offer an exciting and varied line-up of software titles that will deliver the new entertainment experience to PS3 users,” remarked Kazuo Hirai, President and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment. “We will continue to work to have a comprehensive portfolio of attractive and innovative games for the Motion Controller, not only from SCE Worldwide Studios but also from the third party developers and publishers, whom we have been working closely with. We look forward to soon unveiling the exciting software line-up that further expands and defines the PS3 platform as the ultimate entertainment system for the home.”

Combined with the PlayStation Eye camera, the Motion Controller can detect natural and intuitive movement of the hand, to reflect its precise movement in the game. SCE plans to promote the Motion Controller as the “de facto” controller along with the DaulShock series controller. It also plans to deploy various measures to enhance the software line-up for the new Motion Controller.

It looks like the company is focusing on putting in place a few games to go with its Motion Controller. And the new release frame could well see it competing with the Xbox 360’s Natal. But will Sony start to package PS3 system with the new controller? Who knows?
