Sony’s new Motion Controller Unveiled, coming in Spring 2010

Sony has everybody waiting with baited breath about their new motion control device for the PS3, and many expected an announcement at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. Now Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) has announced that it is set to release a new motion control device, unofficially called the Motion Controller, for the PS3, sometime in spring 2010.

PS3 Motion Controller

The new controller is equipped with extremely accurate high-precision motion sensors and is capable of delivering an entirely new experience on the PS3, when combined with the PlayStation Eye camera. The PlayStation Eye can recognize and track a user’s face, voice, and even body motion, and display the player’s image on the screen.

The new Motion Controller is fitted with not one, but two motion sensors, a three axes gyroscope, and a three axes accelerometer, which can sense the angle and movement of the controller held in the user’s hand. In conjunction with the PlayStation Eye, the controller can detect the natural and intuitive movement of the player’s hand. The sphere on the top of the controller not only tracks the absolute position of the controller, but is also capable of giving visual feedback to the player by changing colour or illuminating patterns.

In addition to the above mentioned features, the Motion Controller will also have a rumble feature, similar to the PlayStation DualShock series controller. The new controller will also feature Bluetooth 2.0 and an internal Lithium-ion rechargeable battery. While the release is scheduled for spring 2010, the price of the new controller hasn’t been decided yet.
