Mass Effect 2 is the role playing sequel to Mass Effect and second in the ME trilogy. Now we have word that BioWare has revealed ‘The Cerberus Network’, an in-game portal in Mass Effect 2 which is designed to keep fans engaged in the diverse Mass Effect universe through DLC and news. The Cerberus Network is activated exclusively through a single-use unlock code which is included in the retail and digital versions of the game.

It is a sort of conduit for players to receive bonus content as well as daily messages and news on upcoming releases for ME2 at no extra charge. Those who don’t buy a new game can also unlock The Cerberus Network through a one-time, in-game purchase of a new activation code.

“The Cerberus Network augments and extends the rich universe of Mass Effect 2,” stated Dr. Ray Muzyka, co-founder, BioWare and Group General Manager of the RPG/MMO Group of EA. “We’re thrilled to be able to reward loyal BioWare and Mass Effect fans with ongoing, high quality content and provide a direct channel for our players to dive deeper into the intriguing lore of Mass Effect.”

Those who access The Cerberus Network will receive the game’s first DLC pack on January 26, 2010, which is the North American launch date. The first DLC has new in-game items and missions, including a mission featuring Zaeed, a gun-for-hire recruited to join in Commander Shepard’s mission to save mankind.

Post-launch, BioWare will release another DLC pack for the game. This pack will introduce the Hammerhead, a new and agile hover tank which features improved handling on rough terrain and maneuvers beautifully in combat. In addition to the new vehicle, the DLC pack will also contain new missions and unique in-game items.
