Sony boss reveals the reason behind transforming the PlayStation 3 font

The Sony PlayStation 3 console was first released four years back in 2006. Just until recently, the system sported the PlayStation 3 name in the familiar Spider-Man typeface. With the introduction of the new slimmer version of the console, the font has developed a slight change. According to TimesOnline, Sony Computer Entertainment executive Kaz Hirai reveals just why the font style had to change.

PS3 Consoles

Speaking with The Times Mr. Kaz Hirai said, “We wanted to make sure that we set a new direction for the PS3. The PS logo with the capital P and small S has always been our logo, has always been synonymous with video games and I wanted to reset the thinking. Also internally I wanted to send the message internally that we are resetting the thinking, going back to our roots. What better way to do it than by resetting the logo? That puts the entire organization on its toes.”

He further suggested more practical grounds as to why the font was altered. The PlayStation 3 style also underwent a change as the original one was facing some visibility problems. Hirai explained that the ratio of the font was formulated in such a way that it would be barley visible if placed on a billboard or any other such place.

Earlier the gaming console bore the PlayStation name all in Spider-Man typeface. However the latest slim system now has on its exterior body simply ‘PS3’ in a different font type.
