PS3 No Longer On Life Support, says Howard Stringer from Sony

As the year progresses, the fight for the supremacy in the next generation consoles battle heats up. Howard Stringer, who is the chief executive officer of Sony, has said that the PlayStation 3 is no longer on life support and features like Blu-ray and PlayStation Network have enlarged the console’s capabilities further than gaming.

“We are coming along, I think. Culturally, the word ‘profit’ is not high on anybody’s agenda in Japan, and we have turned that around. We closed our 5 percent margins… There is a sort of sense of, we are climbing up the mountain. We are nowhere near the top, but we are halfway up… The level of competence is growing, which is the main thing.”

Howard Stringer is of the view that their next generation console and Blu-ray share a symbiotic relationship. He also pointed out that he does not expect optical media being replaced in the near future. When asked about Sony’s presence in different areas of consumer technology, Stringer replied that they are more like a giant department store taking on really skillful boutiques!
