E3 2008: New 80GB PS3 Unveiled by Sony

Earlier this week, we had reported that Microsoft had cut the price of the 20GB Xbox 360 and introduced a new Xbox 360 that has a 60GB hard disk drive. Well, Sony had to do something about it! Now at E3 2008, Sony has announced a new 80GB PlayStation 3 for the gamers.

Well isn’t there an 80GB PS3 already? Well, this new 80GB PS3 will have the features and functionality of the 40GB version of the console that was released last year. This means it will not have PS2 compatibility. It will only have two USB ports as well as a Blu-ray player, HDMI output and an integrated Wi-Fi connection

Jack Tretton is the president and chief executive officer of SCEA. He says, “It’s undeniable we have three successful platforms, the broadest and best line-up of some of the biggest exclusives in the business, and are continuing to deliver compelling and original content to our consumers. Expect to see continued momentum this year as we stay focused on delivering products and services that expand the strength of our brand and reaffirms PlayStation’s place at the center of consumers’ homes.”

PS3 is not the only console that Sony is concentrating at E3 2008. They also announced a Ratchet and Clank Size Matters PSP Entertainment Pack. Previously Sony has come up with five PSP packs like the Daxter PSP LE. They also introduced a limited-edition Lego Batman: The Videogame PlayStation 2 Pack and have stated that they will be releasing more than 130 new titles for the console.

The new 80GB PlayStation 3 will cost $399 (approx. Rs. 17, 140) and will be out in September 2008. As for the Ratchet and Clank Size Matters PSP Entertainment Pack, it will be out in October 2008 for $199.99 (approx. Rs. 8550). The limited-edition Lego Batman: The Videogame PS2 Pack costs $149.99 (approx. Rs. 6400).
