PopCap Games to be Usurped for over 1 Billion USD?

Is it take over time for Bejeweled creators, PopCap Games? And with an apparent price tag of over 1 billion USD, someone seems to mean serious business. Multiple sources seem to have notified TechCrunch that some gaming giant is in the process of buying out PopCap games for over 1 billion USD.

PopCap Games

Some drama unfolded when, according to Venturebeat, a PopCap employee tweeted about her boss’ reaction to the news, “@MrPope Sorry, I might not have been clear. I was simply stating that @TechCrunch’s article is not true,” and later, “I’ll be working there next week! My boss confirmed it for me.” Subsequently, these tweets were deleted further invigorating the rumor. Popcap’s yearly revenues range from 100-150 million USD which would make it a big catch for anyone who eventually buys it.

Zynga, the brains behind Facebook’s Farmville, have been on an acquisition roll since the last two years, picking up companies like Area/Code, Floodgate Entertainment and more. So, unsurprisingly that’s the first name that pops up in one’s mind. But apparently they have backed out from the deal sighting the huge asking amount.

If buying potential is the question, EA is rightly being speculated by TechCrunch to be the potential purchaser. Having acquired Playfish for up to $400 million chances are that they might just shell out the 1 billion USD in question. Asian giants looking to penetrate the U.S. markets are also expected to be on the fore of the deal. Chinese company Tencent is one such candidate.

There has been no confirmation from PopCap Games for the 1 billion USD deal yet, but the news refuses to get stale. Gamers would be kept posted by us over latest developments.
