Doom: Eternal

Doom: Eternal had double the concurrent players its predecessor had on Steam in its first week, with almost a million copies sold in its first month. It received very favourable reviews, with many critics praising its fast-paced, high-energy gameplay.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Easily the most talked about game of the year so far, Animal Crossing: New Horizons arrived for the Nintendo Switch in March to much fanfare. The life simulation game, where players turn a desert island into a budding, bustling community of furry-faced friends, appealed to gamers of all ages and tastes.

It was no surprise, then, that it sold over a million copies on release day in Japan alone, with worldwide sales figures of just over 13.4 million by the end of the month. On top of this, it’s also sparked a wonderfully respectful community of players in the online space.

Resident Evil 3

In the world of entertainment, remakes are often frowned upon as cheap ways to earn the cash of existing fans by releasing the same content. The recent Resident Evil remake, however, has proved that developer Capcom’s love and passion for the series is the driving factor in why they’ve remade these classics.

The latest, Resident Evil 3, sold around 2 million copies in its first 5 days of release, with fans and critics enjoying a trip down nostalgia lane while also praising the beautiful visuals and added content.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Another remake, though this time from developer Square Enix, 1997’s Final Fantasy VII has long been regarded as one of the greatest games of all time and a hallmark of the industry. With this in mind, remaking it was a huge task to please both existing fans and new players.

Despite this, Square Enix pulled through and delivered a stellar game that treats its source material with great respect while revamping certain aspects for the tastes of modern gamers. With excellent reviews across the board and 2.5 million copies sold in three days, it became the PlayStation 4’s biggest-selling exclusive and a must-buy for anyone into action/adventure games.
