Consoles Stealing Hardcore Gamers from PC: Mark Rein

Mark Rein Gamers love hearing to what Mark Rein has to say. He is one of the biggies in the gaming industry today. Rein had called his company, Epic Games, as a multi-platform company but it seems that he too feels that gamers are shifting towards the consoles from the PC. Mark Rein told Guardian that consoles are stealing hardcore gamers from the PC.

Mark Rein is the vice president of Epic Games. He explains, “I’m a real fan of the PC, but yes, consoles are definitely stealing a lot of hardcore gamers from the PC. When Call of Duty 4 came out, I heard some of our guys sitting around talking about the great game they’d had last night and I’m like, ‘Hey guys, what server are you playing on? I’d love to come and join you,’ and they said, ‘Just send us a friends request,’ It was at that point I realized they were all playing it on console. Plus, the sales of the console versions are something like ten times the sales of the PC versions.”

Besides giving his views on the consoles and the PC platforms, Rein also spoke on the technology that powers the video games. The Unreal Engine 3 is used by many of the action games these days and when quizzed about Unreal Engine 4, he indicated that UE 4 is a one-man research project and mentioned that it would need a new generation of hardware to power the technology.
