Chinese Teen Burns Peer, Blames World of Warcraft

Do something violent and then blame video games. It seems that this trend is catching up fast! Beijing News is reporting that a 17-year-old Chinese boy burned his classmate and then blamed the massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG), World of Warcraft for his misdeeds.

The boy, who is from the capital of China, had a fight with a classmate, which he lost. However, he then decided to take revenge a few days later by pouring a water bottle full of gasoline onto the classmate against whom he had lost against. He then lighted the victim on fire. The victim suffered from third-degree burns on 38 percent of his body. The perpetrator later claimed that he had lost himself in World of Warcraft. He then stated that when he committed the crime, he had transformed into a Fire Mage.

The 17-year-old boy was punished and was sentenced to 8 years in jail while his accomplice received seven years. Also, the families of the perpetrator as well as the accomplice have been ordered to pay 760,000 RMB (approx. Rs. 40, 60, 000) in reimbursement to the victim, who ended up with burns on 55 percent of his body.
