Star Wars: Battlefront is a series of video games based on the Star Wars films, whose installments have been released for various consoles including PC, PS2, PSP and other platforms. Now gaming blog Kotaku is reporting that although Star Wars: Battlefront III may have been canned, the series will continue in the form of Battlefront Online.

Apparently the game is for the Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles and is currently in pre-production. Battlefront Online is reportedly being worked on by both LucasArts and Slant Six Games, the studio responsible for Socom: Fire Team Bravo 3 for the PSP and Socom: US Navy Seals Confrontation.
As the name implies, Battlefront Online will be an online-only title. As of now, rumours peg the game to be scheduled for a 2011 release on the two consoles. Don’t get too excited though, as the game is still in pre-production, so we might not hear any more of it for quite some time.
