Nintendo’s NX will be an ultra-portable console with detachable controllers

You can count on Nintendo to be extremely innovative with its consoles despite feeling the heat from the competitors. The company’s upcoming NX system will apparently be a portable handheld machine that will house detachable controllers on both sides of its screen.

The way this will work is that owners will be able to carry around their console easily due to its small size. Whenever they are in the mood for gaming, they can just whip out the Nintendo NX, set it down, detach its controllers and start playing.

As for those who want to play games on the big screen, they can make use of a special docking station on which the console will sit. This information has come via Eurogamer which has cited ‘a number of sources’ for the report. The website has also revealed that the NX will run a proprietary operating system rather than Android, quashing previous reports which had pointed to the latter possibility.

Another huge revelation is that Nintendo will be reintroducing cartridges as the preferred method of distributing games, rather than discs. As for the innards, they will supposedly be highlighted by the Nvidia Tegra mobile processor. The console hence will again not be as powerful as the PS4 and the Xbox One.

This will be yet another testament to the fact that Nintendo is not looking to compete with Sony and Microsoft in the great console wars. How this will affect its prospects is that mainstream third-party titles will still be shying away from the system, as is the case with the Wii U.

Nintendo has previously said that the NX console will be released by it in March next year. Let’s see if this report has painted a clear picture of it, or will it end up being something completely different.
