E3 2010: Nintendo Officially Announces 3DS

E3 2010 is in full swing now and Nintendo has officially unveiled its rumoured and much anticipated new handheld gaming console, the Nintendo 3DS. The console can play games in 3D without the need for any 3D glasses and at the E3, the company showcased the device, announcing a substantial line-up of titles for the system. This line-up includes both first and third party games.

Nintendo video game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, is credited with pioneering the fully rendered 3D video game world with Super Mario 64. He commented, “The additional dimension of depth in 3D makes it easier for players to judge distances while giving developers a new tool to create games and experiences that play with both height and depth.”

The Nintendo 3DS features a 3.53 inch top screen and a 3.02 inch bottom touch screen, and goes a step further than its DSi predecessor having three cameras. Two cameras are place on the outer body while one is inside. The cameras will help deliver the 3D effect and take 3D pictures. The console includes a motion sensor, a gyro sensor as well as a Slide Pad for 360 degree analog input.

Nintendo also revealed a range of games and applications for the 3DS. First-party titles include Kid Icarus: Uprising, a long-awaited follow-up to the NES classic, Mario Kart, nintendogs + cats, PilotWings Resort, StarFox 64 3D, a game said to demonstrate the true distance and depth of outer space, Steel Driver, and Paper Mario. The Nintendo 3DS also comes with a list of third-party titles which include DJ Hero from Activision, Resident Evil Revelations from Capcom, EA’s The Sims 3, Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D “The Naked Sample” from Konami, a Kingdom Hearts game from Square Enix, Samuria Warriors 3D from Tecmo Koei Games, and more.

Just when you thought the industry’s bigwigs had knocked Nintendo down, it comes right back up! Kicking! It appears as though the Nintendo 3DS will come in blue, red and black.
